Here are some answers to our most frequently asked questions. For tour and rental availability , just click on the book now button to see calendars for our scheduled tours. Of course, you can contact us at anytime— we’re happy to help!
Our shop is located at 618 Sharder Street, one block from Golden Gate Park, in the famous and must-visit Haight-Ashbury neighborhood.
Fun fact: the Haight-Ashbury is the literal geographic center of San Francisco.
For more info: on the neighborhood and cool things to do here, see our extensive guide to the Haight-Ashbury.
You can book directly through our website sfbiketours.com, just click the ‘book now’ or consult our availability calendar on the homepage. Both include live availability.
Our standard private tour is also bookable online. For custom private tours and events, email us at info@sfbiketours.com with your group size, dates, times, and any other details or special requests and we’ll work with you to plan something special.
You can also call us at 415-890-2453 during normal business hours, 9-6pm PST if you prefer to talk to a human and can provide payment information on the phone. If we miss you just leave a message and we promise to call you back in no time
Book directly on our website for key reasons and benefits:
1. Our tours are usually about 20% cheaper on our website because Airbnb and Trip Advisor / Viator charge us a 20-25% commission.
2. We can offer you much better communication and clearly convey tour details and cool info.
3. More flexible cancellation policy.
It’s a win win and you end up supporting a small business vs a large corporation that honestly doesn’t care about you–we do!
Yes. All tours begin and end at our location at 618 Shrader Street, in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury neighborhood.
Honestly, it’s one of the greatest spots you could ever begin/end a bike experience since you’ll be in one of SF’s coolest neighborhoods and just a block from Golden Gate Park, one of the most epic biking destinations in the city.
While there is no ‘best’ way, you have easy options as the shop is well connected to everywhere in San Francisco. When in doubt cue up Google maps on your phone to 618 Shrader St., but here a few thoughts:
Staying in Union Square or at the Wharf? A neat way to get here is via the N-Line train. It connects from Fisherman’s wharf (use the F-line then transfer) and directly from Union Square, the Financial District and Embarcadero. There are also several buses that drop off only a block or two away.
Feeling adventurous? You can hop on a Bay Wheels bike (our bike share), with a drop off spot just a half block from the shop. Extra points in our book.
Wanna hit the easy button? Ride Lyft, Uber, or the novel Waymo robo-taxi’s– just be sure to budget extra time in transit and to wait for a car!
Please park in the nearest secure lot, since street parking here (and most places in SF) iis limited to 2 hours and we don’t want anyone to get a ticket! The Kezar Lot is located at 825 Stanyan St., a 5 minute walk from our location.
Start with comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for cycling. And we highly recommend dressing in layers. Trust us, San Francisco weather is full of microclimates that are generally cool, with temperatures and conditions often changing quickly, especially when approaching the Golden Gate Bridge, so come prepared.
For example: we wear pants, a long sleeve shirt, and sweater on every ride and almost always pack along a heavier layer like a puffy jacket. We also recommend gloves (which we also sell for $5/pair) and a scarf to stay cozy.
And don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses!
Yes, SF is easily one of the safest cities in the United States to ride bikes with extensive bike infrastructure, dedicated cycle lanes, and a vibrant bike culture.
In short, safety is our #1 priority and we pride ourselves in offering SF’s safest and most comfortable bike experiences.
For tours: you’ll be led the entire time by one of city’s most experienced bike guides, on the safest and most scenic bike routes. You’ll also be connected via wireless headset to your guide, who will give direction and safety cues throughout the ride.
For bike rentals: we’ll supply you with guidance on the safest routes in the city (with GPS-enabled turn-by-turn directions), tips on riding safely, and the same top quality helmets.
Helmets: Each guest is supplied with a MIPS helmet (the safest available) and there is an extensive safety briefing, along with test rides to get comfortable before departing the shop.
Luckily we’re located in the Haight-Ashbury, one of SF’s most storied, interesting, and beautiful neighborhoods that is truly a must-visit.
Packed with SF’s grandest Victorian architecture, best vintage stores, iconic record stores, great cocktail bars, delicious restaurants, and even a legendary pinball arcade, the Haight offers something for everybody.
And we’re just a block from Golden Gate Park if you want more nature time.

Plus our best-in-the-city electric bikes make it easy (and extra fun) to explore hilly landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge.

Guests stay connected throughout the ride, receiving real-time commentary and instructions without needing to stop.
Not only do the earpieces enhance the guest experience by enabling seamless communication between guide and guest, they also improve the safety of the ride.
Not exactly. Our tours are accessible for a wide range of riders and physically easy (because electric bikes) but they are not suitable for beginners or those who aren’t confident riding a bike.
It is important for the safety and enjoyment of everyone that you or members of your group are comfortable and skilled in riding a bike, including up and down hills.
If you haven’t been on a bike for years, please practice before arriving. We recommend trying a Bay Wheels electric bike (our bike share – tons of locations throughout SF!) before coming. Contact us if you have any questions, we’re here to help!

Absolutely! Our guides are local experts and skilled storytellers who have lived in the city an average of 15 years with extensive knowledge of San Francisco’s history, culture, best bike routes, and hidden gems. They’ll share fascinating tales and insights throughout the tour, giving you the most memorable experience possible.

Yes, we ask that you confirm you can park the bike inside overnight. Almost every hotel and Airbnb in SF has a secure parking option on request.
Why? San Francisco, like most international cities has high rates of bike theft. It’s common sense: there is an elevated risk of bike theft when it’s left unattended overnight.
To avoid that risk and you having to pay the replacement cost of a stolen bike, it is essential to park the bike inside at night.
Riders of all ages are welcome! We offer child-sized bikes, cargo bikes (accommodates 1 child), and child seats. However, to rent an e-bike, riders must be at least 12 years old and meet the requirements listed.
At the moment, we require bikes to be returned to the same location where they were rented.
However, we’re happy to help with awesome recommendations on the best routes back to our shop so you can see cool stuff along the way.
There are also a ton of great things to do, shop, and eat in our must-visit neighborhood location.
Yes, you can take our rental bikes on the ferry to / from Sausalito or Tiburon for a scenic ride across the bay. The ferry has space for bikes, and many of our customers enjoy this as part of their San Francisco biking experience.
